1. How did you find about CWB?An ex-project leader plays at my club and mentioned it in passing. He went to Uganda and had a great time so I checked out the website and went from there!
I have always been passionate about Cricket (though my ability has declined!) and had recently returned from a international development trip in Gambia. Seeing the enthusiasm for sport that they had in Gambia made me think that CWB would be an ideal opportunity to spread the word about Cricket and also raise awareness of AIDS. I am also not the beach holiday type and like to use my time off work to get out and see the world and hopefully make a difference!
Another project member and I ran the Bristol Half Marathon in full cricket gear (including helmets). It is not recommended but did the trick and it is clear that is a good cause so getting support was easy. I also got support from my cricket club who put on a poker night and a quiz. Obviously the cricket link is helpful in getting people to sponsor you.
Hectic, inspiring, fun
Arriving at a small clearing in the woods to the noise of 150 Rwandan children (and adults) anticipating a game of cricket.
A trip to an orphanage summed all that is bad with Africa - childhood depravity and dubious owners. However the kids enthusiasm was incredibly infectious but it was very sad at the same time.
Education is the key with spreading AIDS awareness, enthusiasm crosses language and culture barriers, Rwandans favour the legside!
The people – friendly, inquisitive and incredibly enthusiastic. They also made you feel very welcome and were very proud of their country and community. The trip to see the mountain Gorillas comes a close second!
Be ready to work hard and to take every opportunity. The two weeks will fly by so make the most of everything, it’s a cliché but the more you put in, the more you get out. Oh, and to think on your feet – 15 kids can turn into 150 kids and adults in the matter of minutes.
Of course, would love to return to Rwanda and perhaps experience a new country!
