CWB at the Champions Trophy
Cricket Without Boundaries will be showcasing the unique way it uses cricket to deliver HIV/AIDS awareness messages at the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2013 which is scheduled to be held from 6 to 23 June in Birmingham, Cardiff and The Oval.
Volunteers from the charity will deliver coaching sessions to local schoolchildren at the Oval on 5 June and then again at Cardiff Wales Stadium on 8 June, with the first match of the tournament, between India and South Africa is scheduled for 6 June in Cardiff.
The sessions – which will involve Q and A sessions with the West Indies team at the Oval and the New Zealand squad in Cardiff – are part of the THINK WISE global cricket AIDS partnership which is made up of the ICC, UNAIDS and UNICEF.
CWB is a delivery partner for the campaign which seeks to use cricket to help tackle key issues around HIV/AIDS including prevention of the disease and getting rid of the stigma attached to it.
CWB trustee Ed Williams said: "CWB is delighted to be working with UNAIDS, UNICEF and the ICC at such a prestigious world sporting event. It is important to emphasise AIDS awareness messages through cricket, not just in Africa, but all over the world. That is why we are looking forward to help deliver the coaching sessions during the ICC Champions Trophy".
The coaching sessions will mirror the work that CWB does in schools its five project countries; Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana and Cameroon. During twice yearly visits teams of volunteers introduce cricket to schoolchildren while also incorporating the key ABC messages of Abstain, Be faithful and Condomise/protect yourself, into their coaching - for example ABSTAIN from bending your arm when bowling, or BE FAITHFUL to the rules.
